Position Summary

The VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) is an initiative of VinUniversity and the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The center was established in 2021 to conduct high-impact research on biomedical sensing, informatics, and their applications in smart healthcare. We aim at developing state-of-the-art digital technologies to provide widely accessible health monitoring, screening, and diagnostics for people all over the world. We are looking for 10 motivated Research Assistants (RAs) to work on research projects in Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Security, Privacy, Advanced Biotechnological, Chemical & Environmental Engineering, Microbiology & Molecular Biology, Nanomaterials & Biomedical Sensors, Bioinformatics/Modeling, and their applications in Smart Health. This RA position is responsible for developing innovative solutions for large-scale, high-impact, real-world problems in modern healthcare. This RA position also aims to prepare candidates to apply for joint PhD training programs between VinUni and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC, ranked in top 5 in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering in the United States), with full scholarships ( The final PhD degree is granted by either VinUni or UIUC, with 2 years of studying and researching at the other university.


Selected candidates will work under the guidance of Faculty and Research Fellows at VishC. These supervisors will provide detailed description of work and support throughout the project. Depending on each project, you will:

  • Conduct data collection, and perform data processing and analysis.
  • Develop data-driven approaches that could offer potential solutions in smart health.
  • Design and develop new methods for biomedical data acquisition.
  • Design, conduct and troubleshoot experiments. 
  • Knowledge and experience on operation, laboratory techniques, sample preparation for wastewater-based epidemiology or molecular biology, analytical instruments (e.g. PCR, ELISA, DNA/RNA sequencing, …), data analysis.
  • Write and publish papers in top-tier international conferences and journals.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team with commitment to improve the human condition and positively impact the world.
  • Develop strong applications and prepare for PhD programs at VinUni and UIUC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Material Science, Biotechnological, Chemical & Environmental Engineering, Microbiology & Molecular Biology, Nanomaterials & Biomedical Sensors, Bioinformatics, or related engineering fields.
  • Experience in data analysis and research methodology, including ability to conduct detailed literature search. 
  • Fluent in English with excellent reading and writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate your research and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working in biomedical and healthcare applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in biomedical and healthcare applications.
  • Solid coding skills, with programming experience in Python, C/C++.
  • Experience in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, NLP.
  • Hands-on experience with Machine Learning and Deep Learning frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow/Keras).
  • Contributions to research communities, including developing open-source codes and publishing papers in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Computer Vision/NLP.
  • Excellent technical writing skills with examples online.


800 to 1,000 USD per month, depending on qualifications.


VinUniversity, Hanoi, Vietnam (depending on the pandemic situation, RA can work remotely).
