VISHC Researcher won the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award 2023

The organizing committee of the Golden Globe Award 2023 for Science and Technology has officially announced 10 outstanding young Vietnamese scientists. Dr. Pham Huy Hieu – Faculty at the College of Engineering and Computer Science & Associate Director of VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) – is the winner of the award and one of three young scientists with the best achievements in the field of IT and digital transformation and automation. Dr. Hieu is also the youngest scientist (born in 1992) to receive this year’s award.

The Golden Globe Award 2023 for Science and Technology is organized by the Youth Union and Ministry of Science and Technology to discover and honor outstanding young talents under 35 years old who are studying and doing research in the field of science domestically and internationally. There are 5 fields in particular: Information Technology, Digital Transformation and Automation; Medical and Pharmaceutical Technology; Biotechnology; Environmental Technology and New Materials Technology.

Among 69 nomination dossiers from 38 universities, research institutes, and businesses as well as Vietnamese Embassy, Youth Union, and Vietnamese students living in Vietnam and abroad, 10 young talents with outstanding scientific and technological achievements were selected. They are excellent young scientists working both domestically and abroad with numerous patents and useful solutions, high-quality international publications, and innumerable domestic and international awards and medals.

Dr. Pham Huy Hieu is currently a Faculty at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity, as well as a Research Fellow and Associate Director at the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC). He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toulouse, France in 2019 and was a Visiting Research Scholar at UIUC, USA in 2023. His research interests include Computer Vision, Systematic Machine Learning, Medical image analysis, and applications of data analysis in smart healthcare. He is the author and co-author of 45 scientific publications published in more than 30 prestigious international conferences and journals such as Nature Scientific Data, Computer Vision and Understanding Image, Neurocomputing, PLOS ONE, Medical Physics, Frontiers in Digital Health, Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, MICCAI, MIDL, ICIP, ICCV, ACCV.

He is also a peer reviewer for more than 20 leading journals and conferences in the field of machine learning and medical data analysis such as MICCAI, ICCV, CVPR, ECCV, ACML, Signal, Image and Video Processing.

In 2021, Dr. Hieu was honored with the International Fellows Award by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for outstanding young researchers in the field of artificial intelligence. In 2022, Dr. Hieu and his research team won the AI Awards 2022 organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. He is also the co-author of 01 excellent article (Best Paper Award), and owner of 2 scientific inventions and 2 technological solutions that are being implemented in practice.

One of the most outstanding research projects of Dr. Hieu is called “VAIPE – Smart health care monitoring and support system for Vietnamese people”, conducted with his research team and partners at the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center. This project also received sponsorship from the Vingroup Innovation Fund (VinIF). VAIPE provides a mobile platform that allows collecting, managing, and analyzing personal health data, and automatically identifying medicine from pill images. Medicine usage habits, heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight… will be collected and analyzed to provide recommendations on safe medicine usage, warnings for wrong medication, and early diagnosis for dangerous illnesses.

The VAIPE system uses advanced technologies in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and Data Science. It is also low cost, easy to use and accessible on a large scale for community health improvement. This project won the ISCN Excellence Award 2022 for international sustainable development.
