π‘ Abstract: AI is expected to have remarkable success in supporting medicine/health research, education and practice. This talk will focus on Generative AI (mainly large language models) from this perspective. Moreover, the talk focuses on aspects of medical informatics that will challenge the development of quality AI chatbot systems for research. This includes data problems, problems in the medical literature and the nature of causality. In some cases this is related to the problem of “factuality” for chatbots (Augenstein etal. 2023), which is more general than the media hyped issue of “mis/dis/mal-information”. In other cases it is related to the problem of evaluation of medical informatics systems and medical knowledge more generally. Note, I have a strong background in evaluation of machine learning systems, and will draw on this too. So the talk reviews the state of the art and presents the research gap: the need to build/use evidence backed, factuality supporting, robust GenAI systems to support medical science.β
π Speaker Short Bio: Wray Buntine is a full professor and Director of Computer Science at VinUniversity in Hanoi from December 2021 after 8 years at Monash University where he was Director of Machine Learning and founding director of the Master of Data Science. He was previously at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, NASA Ames Research Center, the University of California, Berkeley, and Google. He is known for his theoretical and applied work and in probabilistic methods for document and text analysis, social networks, data mining, machine learning and medical informatics.
