ABOUT THE TOPIC

Rapid growth in clinical and biological data, ever-growing technological breakthroughs, and limited knowledge about the science of crucial diseases pose a challenge while providing both research and business opportunities at an unprecedented scale. The golden opportunity to transform medicine through artificial intelligence and algorithmic innovations is at the core of the Illinois Engineering and Mayo Clinic partnership. The primary challenge is to jointly analyze a variety of large, diverse, and complex clinical and biological data that is dynamic and longitudinal in nature by bringing together cutting-edge analytics, machine learning, and systems engineering expertise to generate what we call Actionable Medical Intelligence – small but valuable signals that provide predictive patient-specific clinical information. At the same time, the data and systems must be protected to maintain patient confidentiality while enabling secured cross-institution collaboration.
The University of Illinois, in close partnership with Mayo Clinic and IBM Research, has been developing tools and technologies to address these challenges based on data and domain knowledge from Mayo Clinic. The applications include several types of cancer pathologies, and neurodegenerative brain disorders with deep analytics and ML algorithmic, innovated in a petascale high-performance supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Finally, the design of a secured health enclave, HIPAA-compliant, SOC2 certified, cluster environments to protect patient data and confidentiality will also be addressed.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Ravishankar K. Iyer is George and Ann Fisher Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, in the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL), the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. He is also faculty Research Affiliate at the Mayo Clinic, and Yeoh Ghin Seng Distinguished Visiting Professor of the National University Health System, Singapore.

Professor Iyer leads the DEPEND Group (https://depend.csl.illinois.edu/ ) at CSL, with a multidisciplinary focus on systems and software that combine deep measurement driven analytics and machine learning with applications in two important domains: i) trust (that spans resilience and the security of critical infrastructures) and ii) health (that spans computational genomics and health analytics focused on personalized medicine). The DEPEND Group has developed a rich AI analytics framework that has been deployed on real-world applications in collaborations with industry, health providers, and government agencies including NSF, NIH, AFRL, and DoD. Iyer directs the Illinois/Mayo NSF Center for Computational Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CCBGM).

Professor Iyer is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He has received several awards, including the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award, and the 2011 Outstanding Contributions award by the Association of Computing Machinery. Professor Iyer is also the recipient of the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from Toulouse Sabatier University in France. https://ece.illinois.edu/about/directory/faculty/rkiyer

Phuong Cao is a Research Scientist at the Cybersecurity Division at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research mission is to secure cyberinfrastructure, in particular high performance scientific computing, e.g., Blue Waters supercomputer.

He has a broad interest in security, with a multidisciplinary focus on Internet-scale measurements of operational systems, deep measurement driven analytics using probabilistic graphical models, ML/AI-driven honeypot for early attack response, and machine assisted proofs of federated authentication protocols. Phuong is a Trusted CI Open Science Cybersecurity Fellow, National Science Foundation (NSF) Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, 2023. Phuong is working with FABRIC, a NSF Mid-Scale RI-1 testbed, on operational security.

Prior to joining NCSA, Phuong has operational experience in the network security industry, including reverse engineering of polymorphic computer viruses, responding to globally distributed denial of service attacks (Akamai’s CDN, LinkedIn), securing the Watson Health Cloud (IBM T.J. Watson Research, z Systems group), and formal verification of smart contracts and OAuth protocols (Microsoft Research, RiSE group). Phuong graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology and CS@Illinois. https://pmcao.github.io/

This seminar opens for all VinUni students, faculty, staff and partners. We are looking forward to your attendance!
