23 VISHC PhD Students Continue Research Training at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign (UIUC)

The VinUni–Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) is pleased to share an update on the center’s ongoing PhD collaboration between VinUniversity (VinUni) and the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign (UIUC).

This academic year, 23 VISHC PhD students pursuing doctoral degrees at either VinUni or UIUC are conducting research at UIUC as part of their joint training program.

VinUni – UIUC Academic Collaboration

Beyond PhD research, VinUni and UIUC also collaborate on several integrated degree programs, including the 3+2 and 4+1 pathways.

  • In the 3+2 program, VinUni College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) students spend three years at VinUni and two years at UIUC, earning a VinUni Bachelor’s and a UIUC Master’s degree within five years.
  • In the 4+1 program, students study four years at VinUni and one year at UIUC, also completing both degrees in five years.

Professor Minh Do, Director of VISHC and Honorary Vice Provost of VinUni, shared:

“Biotechnology and data science are two of the defining fields of this century. We aim to develop breakthrough technologies and apply them to healthcare, creating positive impacts for millions of people around the world.”

Professor Brian Cunningham, Director of the Center for Genomic Diagnostics at UIUC and co-lead of VISHC’s data-driven remote care and diagnostics research, added:

“VinUni students are exceptionally well-trained in engineering and computer science, and they show great promise as future researchers. The VinUni faculty are also outstanding scientists, all motivated to create meaningful impact for communities worldwide through smart healthcare technologies. By combining our strengths, we can achieve far greater outcomes than by working alone.”
